How to Make Leather Tassel Earrings at Home

Handmade jewelry is a great way to dress up any outfit and also makes a great handmade gift, especially as the holiday season approaches. Today we'll show you how to make DIY leather tassel earrings, but as you'll see, you can also make them out of other materials. They'll also look great with the handmade multi-strand bracelets we showed you recently.

I've recently become obsessed with tassels, especially in fall colors, and after seeing a leather tassel on my wallet, I thought they'd look great as earrings. They look great with so many different outfits.

Making Leather Tassel Earrings

However, as you'll see below, you can make these out of other materials as well. This is ideal if you have scraps from previous projects lying around, as I did. I made four in various colors using leather, faux leather, and suede. Although I prefer the leather ones, the faux leather and suede come in a variety of fun colors.

Supplies:
  • Leather, suede, or faux leather scraps
  • Earrings
  • Rings that jump
  • Scissors
  • Pliers
  • A needle and thread, or fabric glue

Instructions:

Attaching the jump rings to the earrings is the first step. With your pliers, open the jump ring, hook it on, and then close it again.

Note that I didn't completely join it in the photograph below so you could see where to open and close it, but once closed, use the pliers to ensure it's completely closed so it doesn't get snagged on clothing or hair.

Determine the length of your tassels. You can make them as long or as short as you want. I don't like heavy earrings, so I made mine a little shorter, but you can also experiment with the number of strands you use. Longer ones could be made with three or four strands instead of the seven I used here for the shorter ones.

Remember that you'll be threading your leather or suede through the jump ring and folding it, so you may need to cut longer pieces than you think you'll need. First, try a few different ones.

You'll also need to cut a small strap to wrap around the tassel's top.

Fold the strands over and through the jump ring, making sure they are all even. Wrap the small band around the top and secure with glue or stitching. If you're going to use glue, make sure it's a permanent fabric glue that will stick to leather, and if you're going to stitch, try to match your cotton to the leather or suede.

The photo above shows the back of the earrings where I glued the band. As you can see, it got a little messy, but you'll be able to peel the excess glue off the back.

Tip: If you choose to sew the band on rather than glue it, wrap a small rubber hairband around the tassels first to keep them closed while you sew. You only have so many hands, and I tried it, but it was difficult to keep the tassels bundled up tightly while stitching without the rubber band.

And you'll have some gorgeous earrings to go with all of your fall outfits.
